A real estate developer's view of Disneyland

Over at the fantastic blog "SamLand's Disney Adventures" is the following:

"James W. Rouse, a wildly successful real estate developer whose notable achievements include the first enclosed shopping mall east of the Mississippi and an entire city called Columbia in Maryland. He then went on to save historic downtowns by creating festival marketplaces such as Faneuil Hall in Boston. In 1963 he gave the keynote speech at the 1963 Urban Design Conference at Harvard University. This is what he had to say about Disneyland:

'I hold a view that may be somewhat shocking to an audience as sophisticated as this: that the greatest piece of urban design in the United States today is Disneyland.
If you think about Disneyland and think of its performance in relationship to its purpose, it’s meaning to people – more than that, it’s meaning to the process of development – you will find it the outstanding piece of urban design in the United States.
It took an area of activity – the amusement park – and lifted it to a standard so high in its performance, in its respect for people, in its functioning for people, that it really does become a brand new thing. It fulfills all its functions it set out to accomplish, un-self-consciously, usefully, and profitably to its owners and developers.
I find more to learn in the standards that have been set and in the goals that have been achieved in the development of Disneyland than in any other piece of physical development in the country.'"

You can view the full article here.

It's amazing how much of an impact Disney had on the real estate community and in people's lives.  Disneyland was a true inspiration for building techniques, layout, and design for amusement parks.  It's cool to hear a successful real estate man be that impressed by it.

Gotta love Disneyland!

A summary of 2009 and rumors of things to come

Here's a summary of what happened at WDW in 2009: link

I'm excited to see what happens in 2010, especially after reading about those rumors for DHS.

Disney Parks Blog talks more about Space Mountain updates

From the Parks Blog:

Space Mountain
"We have more details to share about the Space Mountain attraction at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Parkas renovation work wraps up.
As you know, the classic Space Mountain experience still exists — it’s just being updated with new technology and 21st century gadgetry. Inside the attraction, there’s new lighting as well as special 'darkening' effects. And you’ll see updated color schemes for rocket capsules, line and load areas. Imagineers worked with Walt Disney World Facilities Asset Management for even more enhancements, including new paint, carpet, seat fabric and other décor elements.
Space Mountain
But what caught my attention during a recent walkthrough were details about track upgrades. It’s the same track layout and overall look and feel but workers integrated new technology into the track while not changing the classic Space Mountain ride experience. 'As technology evolves, it helps us enhance those elements without losing any essence of the attraction,' Walt Disney Imagineering Senior Show Designer Alex Wright says.
You should also know that a ride photo system will capture guests during their space flights on Space Mountain. It’ll utilize Disney’s Photopass, allowing you to access, share and purchase photos during and after a visit.
Alex says he thinks you’ll be 'pleasantly surprised' with the enhancements. The attraction is scheduled to reopen on November 22."

First look at the new Space Mountain

From the Disney Parks blog:

"When renovation work finishes on the Space Mountain attraction at Walt Disney World Resort, it’ll be the same classic experience with a few new surprises. And now, Walt Disney Imagineering is offering an early peek at some of those surprises and the first images from inside the attraction.

As you know, with any Imagineering project, the story comes first. And the updated Space Mountain attraction at Walt Disney World Resort is no exception. With the update, the storyline is being extended – and you’ll be able to take part.

Passengers will be able to immerse themselves in unique game play as they prepare for blast off, becoming part of the space station adventure. During a recent walkthrough, we deflected asteroids to keep runways clear as part of the story.

The interactive experiences are based on duties you’d find on board a long-traveling space craft, according to Walt Disney Imagineering Senior Show Designer Alex Wright. Each game lasts about 90 seconds with a 90-second interval and the games can accommodate 86 players at one time.

As you move along on your journey, there are “insider” touches typical in projects created by Imagineers. For example, if you’re up on your Disney trivia, you’ll recognize a sign bearing the logo “H-NCH 1975″ as a tribute to late Imagineer and Disney legend John Hench. There are also other “Disneyphile” references hidden throughout the attraction.

Space Mountain celebrates the Golden Age of Rocket Travel – inspired by the jet age of the early 1960s. The attraction highlights excitement around the endless possibilities regarding space travel. It did back when it opened in 1975 and I think you’ll agree it still does."

Oh man - I can't wait to check this out!

An addition to the "Horizons" post

At the Horizons1.com site, there is a links page that includes a link to "Mesa Verde Times".  Here's what Horizons1.com has to say:
When Horizons closed then re-opened, a group of self-proclaimed 'Disney dorks' went on a mission to take as many photos and videos of the ride as possible. But not from inside the ride cars! These guys hopped out and took an amazing adventure in, around, above, below and behind the sets to capture the magic of the ride that they knew would disappear at any moment. They were also the last members of the public to ride the ride...."we just stayed in the ride for 8 hours at a time. We ate dinner there and even washed ourselves in the Mesa Verde Kitchen scene waterfall." Warning! This blog of hundreds of pictures will absorb hours, so plan ahead!! Humorously written by two of the guys who clearly loved the attraction.
Absolutely amazing site.  I have linked it under our "Other News Sites" section.

Horizons - If we can dream it...

I knew this happened yesterday as well, but the 26th birthday of Horizons was yesterday.

Horizons was one of my most favorite attractions at EPCOT (yeah, I still capitalize it).  Growing up and going to Disney, it was always a special part of our trip to the park.

One of the greatest tribute sites I've seen, Horizons 1, made mention of the 26th birthday.  On their site they have links to Martin Smith's tribute videos and some music, all of which I highly recommend.

Mickey Mouse - break it down

From Disney's official parks blog...

So cool!

WDW's Magic Kingdom's 38th birthday!

Today is the 38th "birthday" (1971 baby!) of the Magic Kingdom at WDW (and also the 27th birthday of Epcot - 1982).

There is a video posted by Disney's official (and new) blog here: http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2009/10/a-model-day-at-the-park/

It's a tilt-shift video that uses pictures that have had the tilt-sift effect applied.  Basically, that effect makes everything look miniature.

I got kinda teary-eyed at the end.  Yeah, I know, I'm a sap.

Enjoy!

cast member story from Theme Park Insider

Robert Niles, a writer for "Theme Park Insider", has written up an article about being a cast member for Disney. The article is about Big Thunder Mountain (a favorite attraction of mine) and describes in detail how cast members deal with a crying child.

According to Robert's story, rides are not allowed to be deployed when there is a crying/screaming/etc. child.  I didn't know that!  It makes perfect sense, and of course Disney would consider that.

Be sure to read the comments at the end too from other former cast members and parents.  It really makes me consider what to take my kids on (and what not to)!

Here is the article...enjoy!

I love the pictures of Herbie...wish I could've seen that in person!

MousePlanet: WDW and Disneyland Resort Updates

Every week MousePlanet releases updates on the WDW and DL resorts.  Here are the links and some major annoucements from them:
  • WDW update
  • DLR update
  • On 9/17 bus service around the WDW resort was halted after a suspicious package was found on board one of the buses.  All of the buses were brought in to be inspected and then released later.  Apparently, the package was harmless, but resort guests were left without that form of transportation during the inspections.
  • The demolition of the Tomorrowland Skyway is almost complete.
  • The new tile work at the entrance of the Grand Floridian is complete and includes marble pictures of Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, and Pluto.  The rest of the tile work will continue through November.
  • It doesn't appear as though the free birthday pass will continue in 2010.  Jay Rasulo, the Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman, is expected to announce the next marketing campaign for the Parks on Sept. 29th.
  • Space Mountain and the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland are closed through Thursday of this week to install the Halloween overlays.  Space Mountain is being added this year to the Halloween overlay group by becoming "Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy" with a new soundtrack and special effects.

new changes to Tomorrowland

As of late there have been some changes happening in Tomorrowland at Walt Disney World.  Here’s a quick rundown:
  • Space Mountain has been closed for a bit starting in April and going through at least mid-November according to some sites.
  • The Tomorrowland Transit Authority (or TTA or WEDWay PeopleMover as I still find myself calling it) has been enhanced with a new lighting scheme
  • A new character meet-and-greet has been added where the Galaxy Palace Theater used to be
  • The Tomorrowland portion of the old Skyway is being demolished (except for the bathrooms which they are keeping) to make room for a rumored extra restaurant
I will say that the Galaxy Palace Theater is not something we ever really went to.  I know they put shows on there and that some might feel that it was an integral part of Tomorrowland but we just passed it by.  Also, since the Skyway has been out of commission for so long (closing in November of 1999), it will be nice to have it gone and have a bigger, seemingly more open space back in the back of Tomorrowland.

I’m excited for the possibility of more restaurants in Tomorrowland because of the lack of them in that area.  According to the “Disney Food Blog”, getting into the Noodle Station can be a nightmare because of all of the private functions and things that are held there.  If memory serves me we’ve only eaten there a few times, and definitely not in the past few visits.

The other restaurants in Tomorrowland, “The Lunching Pad”, “Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe”, and “Auntie Gravity's Galactic Goodies” all provide the same kinds of food you can get elsewhere.  By adding in another restaurant to this corner of Tomorrowland, crowds will be drawn away from the other parts of the land helping with crowd control.

Now on to two of my favorite rides in the Magic Kingdom: the TTA and Space Mountain.
The TTA has been upgraded with some new LED lighting to add some cool visual effects (even in the daylight).  Here is a video of the testing of the lighting before it reopened and here are some pictures of the lighting after it opened.  The TTA is always a nice break from walking and a fun trip around Tomorrowland, and now with some different lighting perhaps a bit more exciting (pending the actual 100% working lights).
Space Mountain is rumored to be getting an interactive queue with some replacement of the track.  Space Mountain has always been a favorite attraction of mine and I have lots of memories of the ride (including the really odd SMTV televisions displaying “news from space”).  I hope the changes they are making to Space Mountain are as good as the ones to Spaceship Earth (another favorite of mine).

High-Resolution Images of New WDW Attractions

Over at the Disney and More blog they have posted some of the high-resolution images for the new WDW attractions.  The images were revealed to D23-goers this past weekend.

Included in the announcement was "Star Tours 2" and a HUGE expansion of Fantasyland (including a new Dumbo themed area and different princess sections).
